The Auto Registration / Texas Driver's License Maze
Steps to "Relocate" your auto registration and driver's license to Texas
Welcome to Texas! Now that you have moved, it's time to handle moving your auto, driver's license, auto title and auto insurance to Texas. It is helpful for you to handle these tasks in the order that follows. Obtaining Texas auto insurance is the first step because you have to show proof that your auto insurance meets Texas' minimum required liability insurance for each of the other steps.
Step 1: Apply for Texas Auto Insurance
With either a U.S. or Canadian driver's license, we can provide a competitive auto insurance quote. Without a U.S. or Canadian driver's license, we can still help, but call us --- (512) 444-3366 --- so that we can discuss what is needed.
Office contact information: Map, Directions and Contact Information
Step 2: Texas Vehicle Inspection
You must have Proof of Insurance (see step 1). You may go to any of the state inspection locations (most auto lube or auto garages). You must have a Texas vehicle inspection prior to transferring your auto title. Be sure to get the "Identification Certificate" from the inspector. This is proof of your auto's ID number.
Step 3: Auto Title Transfer
You must have the following:
- Out-of-State title or current registration with lienholder information (if any).
- Proof of Insurance (see step 1)
- Vehicle "Identification Certificate" (see step 2)
- Social Security Card
- Government Issued Photo ID (like your driver's license)
Next, go to your County Tax Office:
- North Hays County (Buda, Kyle): 500 Jack C. Hays, Buda - Phone (512) 295-6602
- Travis County (most of Austin): 5501 Airport Blvd., Austin - Phone (512) 854-9473

Step 4: Apply for Texas Driver's License
Texas requires that you obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days after relocating.
You must have the following:
- Proof of Insurance (see step 1)
- Social Security Card*
- Proof of Identity* - several possible combinations: A. Birth Certificate and current U.S. driver's license; B. Either your Birth Certificate or U.S. Driver's License plus two supporting documents (i.e., expired Driver's License, Vehicle Title, Military ID, etc.)
- Vehicle Registration receipts on all owned vehicles (see step 3)
- Eyeware, if required for vision check
* Foreign National: Valid Passport & Visa or Resident Alien Card
