Typical Insurance Requirements for Electrical Contractors

GENERAL LIABILITY

Request a quote for General Liability and get to work.

General Liability - To be a licensed electrical contractor in Texas you must maintain the minimum General Liability requirement of $300,000 per occurrence / $600,000 general aggregate / $300,000 product & completed products aggregate.

Public or General Liability is nearly a universal jobsite requirement. Typically, a General Contractor or property owner will require that they be listed as an "Additional Insured" on your General Liability contract. Liability requirements can be very complex and specific. High General Liability limits (in excess of $1 million) are typical jobsite mandates for electrical contractors.

Umbrella / Excess Liability - Umbrella or Excess Liability are often required for electricians particularly if you are working on larger commercial buildings. Umbrella or Excess Liability is an added layer of liability coverage beyond your General Liability policy.

Commercial Auto Insurance - Many jobsites require that your work vehicles be insured on a Commercial Insurance policy with high liability limits. Often, additional requirements include "Hired Autos" and "Non-owned Autos." Electricians often have specially customized trucks to bring tools and needed equipment to jobsites. See Business Vehicle Insurance for more information or to get a quote.

Worker's Compensation - Many jobsites require that you carry a Worker's Compensation contract with Employer's Liability.

Special Insurance Issues for Electrical ContractorsElectrician

License Requirements - To maintain your Texas Electrical Contractors license requires a minimum General Liability of $300,000 per occurrence / $600,000 general aggregate / $300,000 products & completed operations aggregate.

High Liability Insurance Requirements - An electrical malfunction or construction error can cause a lot of damage. This is particularly acute with large commercial buildings or new commercial construction jobs. As an electrician, expect a high level of liability insurance that will trigger an Excess Liability (or Umbrella) insurance requirement for most jobs.

Contractor's Equipment - You depend on your tools & work truck to get the job done. What do you do if they are stolen? A contractor's Equipment floater can help! Be sure your business auto policy has the added value of your custom equipment included for your work truck.

Worker Injury Lawsuit - As an electrician, you know the dangers of working with electrical current and on construction sites. Your business is one injury away from ruin without Worker's Compensation Insurance. If one of your workers gets hurt while at work, how much is it going to cost you? While optional, Worker's Compensation protection of you, the owner, is also critical. See Worker's Compensation on the main Business Insurance page for more information and also see - Essay: Why Work Comp.

Contract Issues - We are seeing very complex and intense insurance requirements from General Contractors and building owners for electricians. Don't sign a job contract without having the insurance requirements reviewed and priced. We can help!

Wrong Auto Insurance Policy - A Personal Auto policy is not rated for driving to jobsites with tools, workers, equipment, etc. A Commercial Auto policy is the right insurance for your work truck and may be needed to meet the special insurance requirements for your jobsite or General Contractor. Electricians often have customized trucks to bring tools and needed equipment to jobsites. Do you have  trailers and multiple drivers? Business Auto Insurance on your work truck can handle these added insurance needs. See Insurance for Business Vehicles for more information or to get a quote.
