Dogs at Play

Austin is Dog Friendly

Austin is known as a little weird. Less well known is that Austinites are crazy about their four-pawed friends.

Many of our parks and public places have play areas for dogs. Auditorium shores has a large leash-free play area and a dog beach. Austin Parks and Recreation maintains twelve off-leash areas and dog parks. Here's a link: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/offleashareas.htm

NiyeckyOutside of the off-leash areas, the City of Austin requires all dogs to be on a leash of no more than six feet in length. The hike & bike trail along Lady Bird Lake is a good place for exercising you and your companion on-leash. Many other greenbelts and trails for walking with your four-footed companion are available.

Since 2006, some Austin restaurants will accommodate leashed and well mannered dogs in outdoor dining areas. Be sure to inquire in advance. Here's a link to a City of Austin webpage for restaurants offering this accommodation: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/health/consumer_health_doprr.htm

Don't forget to handle any "surprises" and keep Austin's parks and waterways clean.
